beloved circa 2004

beloved circa 2004

an amber light over the warmed oven
melted the heavy grey blanket
draped over the “chocolate city”
mouth watering aromas woke them
collards simmering along with stock for the gravy
wide eyed smiles of anticipation rushed into the tiny kitchen
found me sneaking one of the cubes of six cheeses
they took handfuls
ripped open the box of crackers
searched for the game with hearty laughter and accolades of surprise.
you ain’t tell me she can cook too

the meal
the blessing
the appreciation
the Love
we were full
of thanks
